Ryzen 7 7800X3D + GeForce RTX 3060 12GB: the index comparison
Short answer, by resolution — computed from the same index as our live calculator:
| Resolution | CPU index | GPU index | Index ratio |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1920 × 1080 — 1080p | 84.9 | 12.3 | CPU index is 6.9× the GPU index |
| 2560 × 1440 — 1440p | 84.9 | 12.9 | CPU index is 6.58× the GPU index |
| 3840 × 2160 — 4K | 84.9 | 13.4 | CPU index is 6.34× the GPU index |
At 1080p, the CPU index is the larger of the two — the normal shape of a gaming build, where the graphics card sets the pace. No CPU upgrade is indicated by the index. If more frames are wanted, the sensible GPU step is the GeForce RTX 5080, the weakest card closing at least half the index gap (~56.9% of it). The full index match at 1080p — the weakest card whose index meets this CPU's — is the GeForce RTX 5090; that is a mathematical target, usually more card than the build needs.
At 1440p, the CPU index is the larger of the two — the normal shape of a gaming build, where the graphics card sets the pace. No CPU upgrade is indicated by the index. If more frames are wanted, the sensible GPU step is the GeForce RTX 5080, the weakest card closing at least half the index gap (~56.2% of it). The full index match at 1440p — the weakest card whose index meets this CPU's — is the GeForce RTX 5090; that is a mathematical target, usually more card than the build needs.
At 4K, the CPU index is the larger of the two — the normal shape of a gaming build, where the graphics card sets the pace. No CPU upgrade is indicated by the index. If more frames are wanted, the sensible GPU step is the GeForce RTX 5080, the weakest card closing at least half the index gap (~55.5% of it). The full index match at 4K — the weakest card whose index meets this CPU's — is the GeForce RTX 5090; that is a mathematical target, usually more card than the build needs.
How to read the upgrade lines: the sensible step is chosen on performance only — price and value are not considered (we hold no price data).
The parts
Ryzen 7 7800X3D — gaming index 84.9 (Ryzen 7 9800X3D = 100), AM5, peak boost power 162W. Data provenance: Our own spec-derived index. own index
GeForce RTX 3060 12GB — performance index by resolution: 12.3 at 1080p, 12.9 at 1440p, 13.4 at 4K (fastest card = 100 at each). Board power 170W. Data provenance: Our own spec-derived index. own index
How the index gap shifts
The GPU's index standing improves with resolution in this pairing: the CPU index is 6.9× the GPU index at 1080p but only 6.34× at 4K — this card holds its relative performance at higher resolutions better than most.

How this comparison is calculated
Both indices are ours, derived from manufacturer specifications only — no licensed benchmark tables. The CPU index scores gaming-relevant specifications on one scale; the GPU index does the same per resolution. We also built a bottleneck verdict model on top of these indices (a balance curve fitted to the pairings game publishers publish in their own system requirements) and ran it through a pre-registered validation in November 2026; it did not pass, so this site publishes the index comparison and not the verdict. The full method and the validation results are on the methodology page. Your real-world limit will vary by game, settings, driver and RAM.
